Spread the word!

I learned to read early.

I was reading chapter books while my peers were sounding out words, and I lead my class’s reading group because there was no one who could be in a level with me.

I’ve been a reader my whole life, so you can imagine my delight when Mr. C started reading early.

And you can imagine how scared I was when A-Man had no interest in reading.

It isn’t like I’d be upset if he doesn’t love reading.

It’s just that I realized I have no idea how to teach reading.

I was completely over my head, so I went searching for solutions.

I knew that we needed a hands-on reading curriculum that would go at a slow enough pace for A-Man and be interesting enough to keep his attention.

Why Choose a Hands-On Reading Curriculum?

Hands-on learning is helpful for all students, but it’s absolutely vital for autistic kids.

A-Man is a kinesthetic and tactile learner, so we have to have tons of movement and hands-on activities to help him fully grasp concepts.

I have a hard time teaching hands-on reading because that’s absolutely not how I learn.

I’m a reader, and so is Mr. C, so I was completely out of my element.

How To Teach Hands-On Reading

We use All About Reading to incorporate hands-on reading into our homeschool day because without it I’d be clueless.

We use the alphabet poster to sing the ABCs, and touching each letter as we sing helps A-Man really grasp the concepts instead of just memorizing the song.

The poster also allows us to point to letters out of order to see what he understands without the song.

We also love the rhyming cards that come with All About Reading.

Rhyming is a hard concept for A-Man to understand, so with the physical picture cards, we can go at his pace.

It’s also a lot easier for him than simply saying rhyming words.

What is All About Reading

All About Reading is a comprehensive hands-on reading curriculum to help kids who are struggling with learning to read.

It’s a great fit for kids with autism, dyslexia, ADHD or other learning struggles.

The curriculum takes a hands-on multi-sensory approach which really help the kids really understand the lessons.

They also use regular review so that kids don’t forget what they learn.

It’s a mastery-based curriculum, so each lesson could take one day or an entire week!

You can truly take these lessons at your child’s individual pace.

Why We Love All About Reading

We love All About Reading because the lessons are attainable for A-Man.

We’re doing the pre-reading program, and it’s moving at a slow enough pace that he’s grasping the concepts.

He’s got a really good grasp on his letters, and we’re taking the rhyming word practice slowly as he learns to pair words and listen to the ending sound.

I also love that it’s simple for me to do.

The cards for each lesson go into a box and are divided by lesson, so I have everything at my fingertips and ready to go.

A-Man is also getting much better at coloring with the practice.

He loves that each letter is paired with an animal, and he’s really enjoyed listening to the stories included in the book that go with each letter.

That’s huge, because A-Man typically hates being read to.
