As a writer and avid reader, I am always looking for new ways to teach language arts to Mr. C. He absolutely loves to read, but writing is not his favorite, and we’ve found that an integrated language arts approach works best. When he can find a connection between what he’s reading and the rest of his language arts homework he is much less reluctant. What is Kendal Hunt RPD Pathways Reading and Language Arts
Kendal Hunt RPD is a religious publishing company that publishes k-12 curriculum with a Christian focus. Pathways Reading and Language Arts is an integrated language arts curriculum that helps kids learn to love reading, writing, and learning. This curriculum is written with a Seventh Day Adventist background, but we were able to use and enjoy it as non-denominational Christians.
How we used Pathways Reading and Language Arts
While Pathways Reading and Language Arts is originally designed for use in a Christian classroom, we found it really simple to translate the curriculum to our homeschool. Mr. C and I read through the books and did many of the activities together. We also often had him retell parts of the story or read aloud to his younger siblings in lieu of “classmates”.
What we loved about Pathways Reading and Language Arts
I think a huge part of any homeschool mother’s job is to foster a love of reading in her children. Pathways Reading and Language Arts has each lesson centered on the book the kids are reading. I love that they’re reading real books, and Mr. C loves reading the historical fiction.
I also loved how the daily lesson guide made planning so simple for me! The guide makes clear what the reading is for that day, as well as many different activities to complement it. I just had to look at my guide and make sure I had the accompanying worksheets handy. The worksheets are in the back of the daily lesson guides for easy access. The daily lesson guides are separated by the novel, which makes it really simple to know where you are.
The lesson guides give you several different activities covering a wide array of subjects. From science to art to Bible lessons, I loved how it was all right at my fingertips! Mr. C really enjoyed the variety and that we weren’t only doing worksheets every day. It helped us to really understand the concepts in each novel when we learned about them so many different ways.
